Propose in the shadow of the Giralda
Nothing says "Seville" in a single frame quite like the Giralda — the great bell tower rising over the Cathedral, visible from half the city. For couples who want that unmistakable landmark in their proposal photos, the squares around the Cathedral are the place. I'm a Seville-based proposal photographer, and there's a small secret here that most visitors miss: the best proposal spot isn't inside the Cathedral at all — it's the little squares just outside it, which are free, open, and far more romantic.
Plaza Santa Marta — the hidden square
Tucked just behind the Cathedral, down a short passage most people walk straight past, is Plaza Santa Marta: a tiny, almost secret square with a handful of orange trees, an old marble cross in the centre, and a stillness that feels impossible so close to the crowds. It is one of the most intimate places to propose in the whole city — private without being hidden away, and with the Giralda a few steps in any direction. The grand squares: Virgen de los Reyes and Plaza del Triunfo
If you'd rather have the Giralda full and grand in the frame, the open squares on the other side of the Cathedral — Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, with its central fountain, and Plaza del Triunfo — give you the whole tower, the Cathedral wall and the edge of the Real Alcázar all at once. They're busier and more monumental, wonderful for sweeping shots, and just a minute's walk from the quiet of Santa Marta, so we can easily do both in one session.
A note on photographing at the Cathedral itself
The Cathedral and the Giralda climb are ticketed, and — like the other monuments that need a permit — a professional session isn't something you can simply walk in and do. The good news is you don't need to: every great proposal image here is made outside, in the free public squares, with the tower rising behind you. No ticket, no permit, no lead time — just the landmark and the moment.
The best time to propose by the Cathedral
Early morning is magic in these squares — the light is soft, the stone glows, and Santa Marta can be entirely empty before the day begins. How the surprise works
A wander through the old town toward the Cathedral is the most natural outing in Seville, so it raises no suspicion at all. I'm already in position — in the square, among the other visitors, camera ready — and I capture the walk in, the question and the reaction, before stepping in to introduce myself.
