Where the park actually photographs best

The park is big, and most of it is simply pleasant rather than photogenic. Three places are worth building a proposal around. The Glorieta de Bécquer is the one I use most — a monument to the poet set under an enormous cypress, with a curved marble bench wrapping around it and figures carved along the stone. The Estanque de los Lotos, the lotus pond, gives you water, tilework and ducks, with benches on every side and a low wall that photographs beautifully in late light. And the long avenues, where the trees close overhead and the path runs away from you in a straight green tunnel, give the kind of depth you cannot get anywhere else in central Seville. Between those three you have a complete session inside a ten-minute walk.

Why the shade matters more than you expect

This is the practical reason I send so many summer couples here. Seville in July and August is punishing, and the light at midday is directly overhead and merciless — it puts hard shadows under everyone's eyes and washes the colour out of the stone. Almost every famous location in the city is open and unshaded. María Luisa Park is not. Late afternoon is the strongest, roughly the ninety minutes before sunset, when the light comes in sideways through the trunks and lands in long stripes across the paths. It is warm, it is directional, and it makes the dust in the air visible, which sounds unappealing and looks wonderful. Early morning is the other option, and it is the one to choose if privacy matters more to you than drama — before about ten o'clock the park is almost entirely empty apart from a few joggers, and you can propose at the Glorieta de Bécquer with nobody else in the frame at all. Midday is fine here for the reason above, which is not true of anywhere else on this list.

These two are adjacent, and almost every couple who proposes in the park ends up shooting both.
